Stewart F. Mattlage, 72, of Bellevue passed away Saturday, June 5, 2021 at the Stein Hospice Care Center in Sandusky. Stewart was born June 8, 1948 in Mobile, Alabama the son of William F. and Eleanor Elizabeth (Kendall) Mattlage.
Stewart was raised in Milan, Ohio. He attended Lorain Community College and worked for GTE and Verizon as a switch technician for 30 years. Following his retirement, he worked as a concessioner for 23 years. He served in the United States Army during Vietnam and was stationed in South Korea and was a Life member of VFW Post 1238 and American Legion Post 46 and served on the Honor Guard for many funerals. Stewart was also a volunteer firefighter in Norwalk; He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Bellevue along with the Mount Vernon Lodge #64 A.F.&A.M. in Norwalk. Stewart enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events, car shows, and being in the outdoors feeding birds and tending to his flowers and trees. He also enjoyed traveling, especially spending time in Florida.
He is survived by his wife, Diane (Wagner) Hopkins-Mattlage of Bellevue; son, Scott (Tracey) Mattlage of Norwalk; daughter, Sara (Kevin) Ebel of Plover, Wisconsin; stepdaughters: Lisa (Travis) Roesch of Sandusky, Vickie (Tom Croy) Jordan of Castalia, Cindy (Eric) Andrews of Bellevue, Deb (Shawn) Beaver of Oak Harbor, and Cherri (Jon) Vogel of Bellevue; 3 grandchildren; 1 great granddaughter; 13 step-grandchildren; 3 step great grandchildren; and his sister, Lisa (Walter) Russell of Norwalk.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and nephew, William Russell.
Friends will be received on Tuesday, June 8, 2021 from 4-7 p.m. at Foos & Foos Funeral Service, 151 Yorkshire Place, Bellevue. A Masonic service rendered by Mt. Vernon Lodge #64 A.F.&A.M Norwalk will begin on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home. A funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 209 Southwest St., Bellevue. Burial will be at a later date in Bellevue Catholic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made in Stewart’s honor to St. John’s Preschool, 209 Southwest St., Bellevue; Stein Hospice, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, OH 44870; or the VFW Scholarship Fund, 2001 East Main Street, Bellevue.
