Shirley M. Orben, 77, of Bellevue and formerly of Swanton, passed away Tuesday, January 13, 2026 at The Willows at Bellevue. She was born July 12, 1948 in Milford, Pennsylvania the daughter of Edson and Myrtle (Hoffman) Helms.
Shirley dedicated her professional career to working in the Bursar’s Office at Owen’s Community College in the Toledo area.
A woman of faith and service, she was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Swanton, where she served in various capacities. She was also a member of the Eastern Star, holding the position of District Deputy in 1984. After relocating to Bellevue, she continued her community involvement by joining and becoming an active member of the Bellevue Tourist Club.
Shirley was known for her hospitality and generous spirit. She loved to cook, with her specialties including English Muffin Loafs, soups, and pies, which she often shared with others or offered to guests. She was always ready to lend a sympathetic ear over a cup of coffee. In her leisure time, she enjoyed doing word searches and sending acknowledgment cards to recognize the accomplishments of others.
She is survived by her husband, Raymond R. Orben Jr., whom she married June 14, 1969 in Milford, PA; 3 children: Elizabeth (Allen) Knox of Yorktown, VA, Raymond (Kimberlee) Orben III of Columbus, and Katherine (Dr. Daniel) Herring of Bellevue; 8 grandchildren: Mackenzie and Shawn Knox, Reagan, Alex, and Andie Orben, Daniel, Margaret, and Andrew Herring; brother, Lee Helms of Milford, PA; and sister, Lorraine Gregory of Milford.
Shirley is preceded in death by her parents; 3 brothers: Edson “Sonny” Helms, Freddie Helms, and Norman Helms.
Shirley’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Buckeye Hospice for the exceptional care provided during this time.
