Michael Sweeney

Michael Sweeney, 82, of Sandusky, passed away on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at The Willows at Bellevue. Born in Cleveland on September 29, 1943, he was the beloved son of the late Edward F. and Dorothy A. (Nihill) Sweeney.

Michael proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1961 to 1964 aboard the USS Independence. Following his military service, he worked throughout Northern Ohio as both a machinist and a truck driver. In 1969, Mike's life changed with his unwavering commitment to recovery.  For more than 57 years, Mike was a dedicated member of Alcoholics Anonymous.  That extraordinary milestone  represents far more than the passage of time-it reflects courage, honesty, humility  and a daily commitment to living one day at a time. Through his recovery Mike not only transformed his own life but became a source of hope and inspiration to countless others.

Mike lived the principles of recovery. He sponsored countless men, patiently guiding them through the Twelve Steps and walking beside them as they found hope for their own lives. Mike also started three AA meetings at the Sandusky Artisans Recovery Community Center and volunteered his time there frequently, never seeking recognition,  only looking for another opportunity to help someone who was still suffering. 

The many lives he touched are a legacy that will continue. As those he sponsored continue to help others, a part of Mike's spirit will live on in every hand extended, every meeting chaired, and every life changed.

He is survived by his sister, Dorothy Ann (Bob) Richards of Rocky River, and his brother, John F. Sweeney of Olmsted Falls; 11 nieces and nephews and several cousins. In addition to his parents, Michael was preceded in death by his brother, Richard E. Sweeney and sister-in-law, Margaret Sweeney.

Inurnment with military honors will be held on Tuesday, July 14 at 1:45 p.m. at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman, Ohio.
