Mary Lou Smith Obituary

Mary Lou (Filsinger) Smith, 86, of Clyde passed away on Friday, December 11, 2020 at Gaymont Nursing Home in Norwalk due to complications from Covid-19.  She was born December 2, 1934 in Clyde the daughter of Raymond and Marietta (Woolley) Filsinger.

Mary Lou married Robert Charles Smith on June 23, 1956 at the First United Methodist Church in Clyde; He preceded her in death on July 6, 2010.

She was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church of Clyde for over 55 years where she shared her passion of music in the choir and bell choirs for many years.  Her passion of music extended through the Sweet Adeline International Women’s Barbershop Association where she was a member and President at times of the Northern Buckeye Chapter of Sweet Adeline’s in our local area for 25 years.

She loved nature, especially birds and was a member of the National Audubon Society for years.  She worked at Jennings Pharmacy in the 1960’s and was manager of the Gift Box in Clyde from 1970 until its closing in 1995.  In 1995 she joined Doebel’s Flowers where she enjoyed her time spent with customers and Cliff and Cheryl Doebel.  She had the best smile, enormous kindness, selfless heart and was loved by all who knew her.

She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca (Kevin) Scherger of Clyde; a granddaughter, Lindsay Rae Scherger of Clyde, whom she cherished with all her heart; sister, Dorothy Filsinger; brother-in-law, Wayne Smith of Fremont; and nieces, and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Georgia Goshe; and an infant sister.

As an expression of love and concern to the Clyde Community due to Covid-19, a memorial service will be held in the spring.  Private graveside services officiated by Rev. Sheryl Seitz will be held at McPherson Cemetery.  Foos Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Clyde is assisting with arrangements.

Memorials in Mary Lou’s honor may be made to the Sandusky County Humane Society, Stein Hospice, First United Methodist Church, or the Audubon Society.
