Mary C. Nickell, age 100 of Clyde, Ohio, passed away Friday, August 1, 2025, at the Willows of Bellevue, Ohio. Mary was born October 16, 1924, the daughter of the late George and Anna Katherine (Rospert) Bartl.
Mary was a devoted member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Clyde, where she gave generously of her time and talents through various ministries, including the Altar Rosary Society and the Bereavement Group. A true homemaker at heart, Mary found joy in the simple but meaningful things—baking, canning, gardening, sewing, and capturing life’s moments through her love of photography. She was especially known for her incredible cooking and baking, always eager to share her homemade favorites like elderberry pie, chocolate cake, and apple dumplings with family and friends.
Mary also had a passion for music and could often be found playing the harmonica, accordion, or organ, filling her home with warmth and melody. She enjoyed a good card game—especially pinochle—and cherished time spent around the table with loved ones. Above all, Mary absolutely loved her family and created a home full of love, comfort, and care. Her nurturing spirit and generous heart will be deeply missed.
Mary is survived by her children: Bonnie (Joseph) Justice, Richmond, VA, John Edward (Lisa) Nickell of Republic, OH, Cathy (John) Gressman of Bellevue, Evelyn (Charles) Wilczak of Wellington, OH, and Sue (Bob) Hohenstein of Green Springs, OH; grandchildren: Gabriel Justice, Michael Justice, Kelley Brooks, Brian Nickell, John Nickell, Cheri Hummel, Scott Gressman, Sara Swander, Wesley Burroughs, Sadie Rogers, Michael Strohl, Chad Nickell, Luke Hohenstein, Timmy Hohenstein, Steven Hohenstein, David Hohenstein, and Ben Hohenstein; 29 great-grandchildren; and sister, Agnes Burgess of Marion, OH.
In addition to her parents, Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Richard Nickell; children: Mary Jane Gressman, Patty Nickell, and Paul Nickell; grandson, Paul Richard Nickell, Jr.; and siblings: Marcella Arndt, George Bartl, Clementine Bartl, Anna Williams, Joseph Bartl, and Edmond Bartl.
