Mary Jane Brakeall

Mary Jane Brakeall, 82, of Attica, died on May 19, 2022, at St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo, Ohio.

Mary Jane was born September 22, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan.  She was the first-born child of her family, and her mother died soon after giving birth.  Her father was a railroad worker in Detroit and was killed in an industrial accident when she was a year old.  She was placed with Catholic Charities in Toledo for adoption.  She was adopted by Albert and Laura (Schriner) Brakeall of Attica when she was three years old.  Laura died in 1980 and Albert in 1990. 

Mary Jane was a graduate of Attica High School and Tiffin University and completed a long business career.  Her first position was secretary to the Dean at Tiffin University.  She completed the requirements to become a Certified Public Accountant while being employed at Deinzer-Pfeiffer & Co.  and Walter Gons & Co., both public accounting firms in Tiffin.  She accepted employment at Tiffin University as an accounting instructor and head of the Accounting Department for the next 15 years.  She returned to Attica to care for her parents.  She served eight years as Clerk-Treasurer of the Village of Attica and six years as Treasurer of Seneca East Schools.  Following her retirement, she worked part-time as secretary at St. Peter and Paul Church for five years.

Mary Jane was a member of Alpha Iota Sorority since 1957 and served in various local, state and district offices.  She was selected the Ideal Business Woman at the 30th international convention held in San Diego.  She was a member of the American Institute of CPA’s, the Ohio Society of CPA’s, and served as the first woman president of the Firelands Chapter.  In retirement, she was a member of the Attica Woman’s Literary Guild serving several terms as secretary-treasurer.  As a lifelong member of Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Attica, she served as lector, on various committees, and on the parish council.

A funeral Mass officiated by Fr. Szybka will begin at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 25, 2022 at Our Lady of Hope Church, 320 Stump Pike Road, Attica, Ohio 44807.  Burial will follow at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery.  Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. at the church. 

Memorials may be made to Our Lady of Hope Church or a charity of the donor’s choice.  Foos & Foos Funeral Service, Bellevue is assisting with arrangements.
