Margaret (Sberna) Welty

Margaret Sberna Welty, 67, of Bowling Green, Ohio passed away Friday December 13, 2019. She was born November 9, 1952 in Bellevue, Ohio to the late Anthony and Marjorie (Nobles) Sberna. She married Gene Welty October 6, 1984 and he preceded her in death July 3, 2015.

Margaret was an avid antique dealer and collector, and managed the Lakeside Antique Show for many years with one of her best friends, Fern Kao. She always stopped at garage sales for this very reason: to find new pieces for her collection. She once even joked that her tombstone could read, simply: “Gone antiquing.”

When she was still a journalist at the Sentinel Tribune, she won many awards for her writing and news coverage. She also met her husband, Gene Welty, while working there. She later left the newspaper to focus on raising her family, though she continued to work as a Postmaster for the USPS until her retirement. During that time, she went above and beyond her job duties to develop programs for the community, like a summer reading program for neighborhood children.

Throughout her life, she was a devoted Catholic, and very active in her local parishes. She was also a member of the American Business Women’s Association.

She was preceded in death by her husband Gene and parents Tony and Marge, as well as her brothers Butch, Tony, and Joe. She is survived by her two sons, William (Valerie) and Ryan, siblings Grace (Jim), Joletta (Dennis), Ted (Sandi) and Walter (Tammy), sisters-in-law Kathy, Linda and Kathy and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday December 19, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Thomas More University Parish, 425 Thurstin Ave. Bowling Green, Ohio. Father Jason Kahle will officiate. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Bowling Green. Visitation will be held Thursday at the church from Noon until the time of the service at 2:00 p.m. Arrangements have been entrusted to Dunn Funeral Home in Bowling Green.

Memorial contributions can be sent to St. Thomas More in Bowling Green. Alternatively, donations can be made in her name to a charity of the donor's choice.
