Jon "Terry" Godfrey Obituary

Jon “Terry” Godfrey, 83, of Bellevue passed away after many years of declining health on June 28, 2021, joining our Lord as well as many family members and friends in paradise.  Born May 15, 1938, the son of Clayton “Dick” Godfrey and Margaret “Marge” (Furlong) Godfrey in Bellevue, Ohio.  Terry married the love of his life, Barbara (Hime) on June 6, 1956, and together they celebrated 65 years of marriage, a level of commitment rare in today’s world.

Terry was a dedicated and hard worker, he retired from the railroad in Bellevue in 1998 after 42 years of service.  In addition, he was known as a skilled carpenter who built two of his family’s primary residences as well as assisting in the construction of numerous other homes for family and friends.  Terry also spent his “down” time working as a commercial fisherman and raising various farm animals.

Even with such a full plate, Terry enjoyed his hobbies.  He thoroughly loved hunting and bagged numerous deer, turkeys, as well as elk, wild boar, and bear, sometimes in the presence of sons, Kelly and Scott.  Later in life, he brought many of these animals to life through his skilled wood carving ability.  Terry, a big-hearted person, generously carved and donated over 300 angels for family members, friends, and grieving families in the area.  When they could, Terry and Barb enjoyed traveling, especially to his family’s homeland of Ireland.

Terry’s memberships and involvements included Bellevue’s Immaculate Conception Church, Knights of Columbus, Wood Carvers Association, and the NRA.

Terry was preceded in death by his parents, Dick and Marge; daughter, Sheri; daughter-in-law, Amy; grandsons, Jeremy and Cody, and sister-in-law, Betty Sutherland.  Left to cherish his legacy are his wife of over 65 years, Barb; sons, Mike “Pat” (Karen), Kelly (Nancy), Scott, and Tim (Veronica) Godfrey; Siblings, Judy Herman and Mike (Cheryl) Godfrey celebrate his life as well.  In addition, 10 surviving grandchildren, 7 step-grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; 15 step great grandchildren; and 15 nieces and nephews.

The family extends a special thanks to Southern Care Hospice of Milan personnel, Amber and Anna, and Action Angels of Elmore aide, Vanessa, for the assistance they provided during Terry’s final weeks.
