Obituary

In the morning of July 3, 2023, John Nicholas Nigro died in Honolulu Hawaii after a long illness
at the age of 73. He was born in Bellevue OH on October 22,1949 to Dominick and Effie Nigro
who preceded him in death. He was the oldest of three boys and is survived by Thomas (Mary)
and Dominick Jr. (Patricia). John was cremated on July 18, 2023. 


John graduated from Bellevue High School. He worked several jobs and dedicated himself to
running. After several years of competitive racing, he decided to go to Honolulu, Hawaii in 1979
to participate in the Honolulu Marathon. He fell in love with this paradise island and lived there
until his death. His career of 43 years was spent as an employee of the City and County of
Honolulu where he held various positions. He was the Road Labor Supervisor at the time of his
death. He loved his work and those he worked with over the years.


John loved talking to people and developed friendships with many people inside and outside of
work. He was very health conscious and an avid biker. He loved sharing his biking adventures
with his family. He was a health enthusiast and frequently participated in "spin" classes at a local
health club. He became good friends with those in the classes. John was a longtime fan and an
active Booster of the Women’s Volleyball and Basketball as well as Men’s Basketball and
bought season tickets for many years.


John was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, numerous aunts and uncles, a nephew,
and cousins. In addition to his two brothers, he is survived by nieces and a nephew, an aunt,
cousins Karen and Steve Idle, and many other cousins. 

The family would like to express their gratitude to John's friends who have been so supportive
over the years and especially during this difficult time and to the medical professionals and his
personal healer who cared for him during his illness. 

Anyone wishing to make an expression of sympathy in John's name may do so to The University
of Hawaii Boosters designating the Women’s Volleyball and Basketball, and the Men’s
Basketball programs or to the American Heart Association.

Interment will be private at Belllevue Catholic Cemetery, and a service will be held in Honolulu as well.
