Jean M (Hagerty) Smith

Jean M. (Hagerty) Smith, age 87, went to her heavenly home Monday, December 28 at Stein Hospice in Sandusky, Ohio. She had been living with and cared for by her daughter Colleen and son-in-law Larry for the past 4 years. Colleen was holding her hand when she passed.

Jean was born October 10, 1933 in Fremont, Ohio to Joseph “Frank” and Elizabeth (Baker) Hagerty. She graduated from St. Joseph High School. Jean met her husband, George (Larry) at St. Joe’s. They were married 62 years until his death in 2014.

In 1953 Jean and Larry, moved to Bellevue, Ohio where they raised their 8 children while caring for many family pets. In 1994 they moved to Florida where they lived for 10 years before moving back to Bellevue.

Jean was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Bellevue and the Red Hat Society while in Florida. She enjoyed crocheting, playing cards, Bingo, reading and going to the Dairy Queen. She also enjoyed watching the Indians, Browns and Tiger Woods on TV.

Jean will be remembered by all for her smile and infectious laugh. Her family will lovingly remember her home-made chocolate cake with chocolate frosting, dinner on the table at 5:00 nightly, teaching them to play card games, camping, and always having a house full of kids (not always her own), noise and fun!

Jean is survived by her children: Stephen of Cincinnati, Stanley (Pam) of Bellevue, Daniel of Sandusky, Patrick of Clyde, Colleen (Larry) Renwand of Norwalk, Brent of N. Fort Meyers, Florida, and Kelly (Bill) Baptista of Bellevue. Jean is also survived by her 16 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son David; siblings: Russell and Joseph Hagerty, Ruth Rhodes and Ruby Mayle.  

A funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, January 6, 2020 at 11:00 am at Immaculate Conception Church, 231 E. Center St., Bellevue.
