Jean Schmerbeck Obituary

Jean R. Schmerbeck, age 82 of Clyde, OH, passed away Saturday, June 21, 2025, at the Willows of Bellevue. Jean was born October 13, 1942, in Sandusky, OH, the daughter of the late John Vladeff and Elizabeth (Pitts) Shearn.

Jean graduated from Clyde High School in 1960. She deeply loved her family and extended family and was always ready for a get-together of any kind.

She was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church in Clyde for over 60 years. During that time, she participated in several clubs, served on various committees, and enjoyed helping with Bible School, funeral dinners, and many other church activities. Jean was also active in the community and was honored with the Single Parent of the Year Award in 1981.

Early in her career, Jean worked for Max Taxi, owned by her Aunt Mert, and later at Fremont Memorial Hospital in Central Supply, where she retired in 1986.

Jean loved to travel and shared many adventures with her husband, Norm. She spent winters in Las Vegas and Florida, and traveled to England and Ireland. She had a special appreciation for the Southwest and Native American history. Jean also enjoyed putting together large puzzles and watching the birds, deer, and other wildlife from her back door.

A talented artist, Jean created numerous drawings and paintings. She also enjoyed ceramics—especially holiday-themed pieces—crocheting, and making cherished scrapbooks for each of her grandchildren. She loved all kinds of crafting and took great joy in watching her grandchildren participate in sports, band, 4-H, and school activities. Jean was a generous and giving person who found joy in sharing her talents with others.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff of the memory unit at The Willows at Bellevue and to Stein Hospice for their kindness, affection, and outstanding care.

Jean is survived by her children: Joseph Gillett, Todd (Tanya Lagrou) Gillett, Rebecca (Matthew) Riehl, Edwin (Kari Ann) Gillett, and Betsy (Todd Ellison) Gillett; stepchildren: Mike (Suzette) Schmerbeck, Connie (Gary) Kern, Jamie (Jay) Babbitt, Peri Schmerbeck, and Jeff (Angie) Schmerbeck; grandchildren: Emily, Lauren, Mackenzie, Laini, Alex, Adrienne, Ethan, and Elizabeth; 2 great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters: Beverly (Dale) Hill and Diane (William) Voelker; aunt, Roberta Frampton; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Jean is preceded in death by her husband, Norman Schmerbeck; step-father, Gerald Shearn; sister, Carol Frederick; and daughter-in-law, Sandra Gillett.
