Dolores Mariea

Dolores Isabel (Clark) Mariea, 95, of Sarasota, Florida, and formerly from Castalia, Ohio, passed away on October 8, 2025.  

She was born on August 24, 1930, in Lowell, Massachusetts, to the late Elmer and Bertha (Holder) Clark.  

Dolores graduated from Lowell High School in 1947, and then completed a one-year business program at Burdett College in Boston, Massachusetts.  Shortly thereafter, she moved to Tacoma, Washington, where she began working at Madigan Army Hospital.  During her time there, she met her future husband, Staff Sergeant Neil Mariea, who was recovering from minor injuries.  Eventually, Dolores moved to Sandusky, Ohio, the hometown of Sergeant Mariea, where they married in 1953, and began to raise a family.  A few years later, they settled in Castalia, Ohio, to continue raising their family.  

Besides helping out in her husband’s insurance business, Dolores worked for several years as Secretary to the Administrator, at Providence Hospital, in Sandusky, Ohio.  As her children grew older, she became interested in pursuing her college education and attended night classes, as time permitted.  Dolores also enjoyed getting together to play cards and share stories with her girlfriends from the Venice Heights Card Club.  

She worked tirelessly, very patient and kind, in raising 4 small children who evolved into teenagers, and eventually became adults, and moved away.  Still interested in pursuing her education, Dolores moved to Bowling Green, Ohio, where she completed her degree at Bowling Green State University.  She then lived in different parts of the country, visiting her children.  Preferring a warm, sunny climate, she relocated to Sarasota, Florida.  For the next several years there, she worked as a Case Coordinator for Children’s Protective Services.  Upon retirement, Dolores remained in Sarasota, but traveled to visit family and friends in various parts of the country.  As a member of the Audubon Society, she also enjoyed going on “birding trips”, exploring different wildlife areas in Florida.  

Dolores is survived by her two sons, Steve Mariea of Dover, Ohio, and Jeff (Martha) Mariea of Milan, Ohio, and daughter Sharon Mariea of Sarasota, Florida, six grandchildren, Brian (Jen) Mariea, Madelyn (Michael) Gorkin, Emily (Keith) Lane, Hannah (Sammy) Mitchell, Brandon Mariea, and Ashley (Andrew) Yoder, as well as 10 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.  

In addition to her parents, Dolores was preceded in death by her brother, Robert E. Clark, killed in action at the Battle of Iwo Jima, her sister Muriel “Sandy” Tang, her daughter Janice Mariea-Lapata, two sons, Christopher and Geoffrey in infancy, her daughter-in-law, Maria (McGookey) Mariea, and her sister-in-law and best friend, Georgia Mariea.

Private burial services will be held at Castalia Cemetery.  Foos & Foos Funeral Service, Bellevue is in care of arrangements.
