David R. "Butch" Schmitz

David “Butch” Schmitz, age 86 of Clyde, OH, passed away on Saturday, March 21, 2026 at the Fireland Regional Health Center in Sandusky, OH. David was born on October 2, 1939 in Fremont, OH, the son of the late Gerald and Helen (Sutter) Schmitz. 

David was a man who found joy in the simple and fun moments of life. He loved building and collecting model cars and was an avid fan of NASCAR races. Some of his favorite times were spent sitting on the porch, relaxing and enjoying the day. David also loved sharing laughter, whether it was watching Tom and Jerry, old westerns, The Three Stooges, or classic Saturday morning cartoons.

He had a playful spirit and was known as quite the prankster, always ready with a joke or a harmless trick to make others smile. One of his greatest joys was building Legos with his grandchildren, creating memories one brick at a time.

Above all else, David treasured time with his family. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of his life, and the moments spent with them meant more to him than anything else. He will be remembered for his laughter, his playful heart, and the love he shared with those closest to him.

David is survived by his children: Todd (Vicki) Schmitz of Clyde, Dawn (Lesley “Bubbs” Steward) Schmitz of Fremont, and Tony (Erin) Schmitz of Bellevue; grandchildren: Austin, Maryah,  Dakota, Brooke, Savannah, Keegan, and Elijah; and great-grandchildren: Khloe, Kaesyn, Zephyn, Zek, Avery, and Ezra.

In addition to his parents, David is preceded in death by his wife, Mary (Keegan) Schmitz; 3 sisters; and 1 brother. 

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 25, 2026 from 4:00-7:00pm at Foos Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 504 E. McPherson Highway, Clyde, OH 43410. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 26, 2026 at 10:00am at the funeral home with burial to follow at Greenlawn Memory Gardens.
