Clair "Popeye" Wagner Obituary

Clair Jay “Popeye” Wagner, 93 of Bellevue passed away Saturday, March 28, 2020 at Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky.  He was born July 25, 1926 in Bellevue the son of the late Dewey & Alwilda (Sutherland) Wagner.

Popeye graduated from Thompson High School in 1944. He served in the U.S. Army infantry from September 1944 to December 1946, in the Pacific Theater.

He worked at the France Stone Quarry for 40 years. He was a lifelong member of Flat Rock Ebenezer United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Republic Masonic Lodge #790 for 50 years, Zenobia Shrine in Toledo, Tiffin Shriners Hornets Club, Cornelia Chapter Eastern Stars, Bellevue VFW Post 1238, Republic American Legion Post 404, and York Rite.

Survivors include: his wife of 34 years, Laura (Meinen) Wagner whom he married May 4, 1985; daughter: Barbara (David) Belden of Smyrna, TN; grandson, Grant Belden; and stepsons: Larry (Peggy) Beck of Bellevue, and Jerry (Sherry) Beck of Bellevue.

In addition to his parents, Popeye is preceded in death by his first wife, Betty (Vance) Wagner, and stepmother, Cora Wagner.

As an expression of love and concern for the community, Popeye’s family will be holding private services. Burial will take place at Block Cemetery.
