Bonnie Schaaf Obituary

Bonnie (Orwig) Schaaf passed away on Saturday, July 2, 2022, at Ohman Family Living at Holly in Newbury, Ohio, following a brief illness. Bonnie was born on November 18, 1928 in Bellevue, Ohio, the youngest child of George and Rose (Daley) Orwig. She graduated from Thompson High School in 1946, where she joked that she “was in the Top Ten of her class.” There were only eight members. She loved to laugh and her wonderful sense of humor served her well over her nearly 94 years on this earth.

Prior to her marriage, Bonnie worked at American Baler Company and The Bellevue Gazette. She married Gene R. Schaaf on July 15, 1950 at Zion United Church of Christ, and together they raised four children in their house at the crossroads in Fireside. They were married 68 years until Gene’s death on June 7, 2018. Bonnie was very active in her church, volunteered at Fish & Loaves Pantry, and served for 40 years as a volunteer at United Church Home’s Fairhaven Community in Upper Sandusky.

She is survived by sons Michael (Cindy) Schaaf, of Olive Branch, MS; Tim (Connie) Schaaf, of Chagrin Falls, OH; daughters Patti Mantey (Harry Hundley) of Newport News, VA; and Kelly (Tom) Traut of Bakersfield, CA; five grandchildren: Jennifer (Clay) Perry, Samantha (Logan) Smith, Alison (Michael) Lum, Joey (Alyssa) Traut, and Brian Traut; six great-grandchildren;   Andrew, Allysa, and Alex Perry; Amos and Levi Lum; and Vera Smith. She is also survived by sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Phelps and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Bonnie was preceded in death by her four brothers, George, Jr., Daryl, Verl, and Daniel Orwig; and her eldest granddaughter Mindy Michelle Schaaf.

A memorial service will be held at a future date with burial at Fireside Cemetery. Memorials can be made to Zion United Church of Christ, 13525 E. Twp. Rd. 178, Bellevue, OH 44811; or to United Church Homes-Fairhaven Community, PO Box 1806, Marion, OH 43301-1806.
