Ben Davis Obituary

Ben E. Davis, age 86 of Clyde, OH, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 13, 2025 at the Willows in Bellevue, OH. Ben was born February 15, 1939, the son of the late Ben H. and Mamie (Kautz) Davis.

Ben was a 1957 graduate of Clyde High School. Shortly after graduating, he began his long and dedicated career at R.R. Donnelley and Sons, where he worked for 45 years before retiring.  On November 11, 1961, he married the love of his life, Rebecca Katherine Eshleman, at Clyde St. Mary’s Church. They shared a devoted and joyful life of nearly 55 years. During the early years of their marriage, he took a leave from his job to proudly serve his country in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1965.

He spent many years coaching track at Clyde St. Mary's School, leading his teams to several Toledo Diocesan championships and fostering a love of sport in those he coached. He also generously gave his time and talent coaching football and Little League. Even after his own children and grandchildren were no longer participating, he remained a passionate supporter of Clyde sports and could often be found in the stands, cheering on the teams. He would spend many March days at the OHSAA Basketball State Tournament.  He was a devoted fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes, the Cleveland Indians/Guardians, and the Browns—sports were a favorite source of entertainment.

Later in life, he took up golf and enjoyed playing in a league with his brother-in-law, Paul. A lover of words, he tackled crossword puzzles, word games, and trivia with enthusiasm—everyone knew not to call at 7:30 p.m. because Jeopardy! was on. After retiring, he and Becky traveled together and shared many wonderful adventures. He was also a strong supporter of Becky’s involvement in Sweet Adelines, always proud of her talents and commitment to singing and performance.

He found great joy in his time with his grandchildren. He was always available for a snuggle, and he is remembered for giving the kids silly nicknames that made each of them feel uniquely special. His warmth, wit, and steady presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Ben is survived by his children: Melissa Gaye of Okeechobee, FL, Timothy (Sheila) Davis of Northwood, OH, Amy Davis of Fremont, OH, Theodore (Cathy) Davis of Minneapolis, MN, Deborah (Mark Chamberlain) Harrington of Clyde, Kenneth Davis of Clyde, Marla (Steve) Frankevic of Perrysburg, OH, and Carrie (Scott) Stewart of North Ridgeville, OH; 20 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and sisters: Dorothy Cox, Lenore O’Harrow, and Diane Deken.

In addition to his parents, Ben is preceded in death by his wife, Rebecca Davis; siblings: Barbara Eberly, Janet Hayward, Jean Butz, Joyce Baker, Marian Pfieffer, and Tom Davis; grandson, Jeremiah Rader; and daughter-in-law, Lori Davis.
