Suzanne Meyers Obituary

Suzanne Pickett (Detlefsen) Meyers, 74, died June 14, 2018, in Mercy Hospital, Fairfield, Ohio. She had become ill several days earlier while attending a reunion of her class at Western College for Women in Oxford, Ohio. Suzanne was born May 23, 1944, in Sandusky, Ohio, to Harold and Eileen (Pickett) Detlefsen. On June 7, 1966, and again on March 20, 1999, she married John Meyers. They have four children: Benjamin and Peter (Meredith), of New York City; Thomas (Guillaume) of Maplewood, NJ; and Elizabeth (Matthew) Hendrickson, of Athens, Ohio. There are five grandchildren: Alex and Simone Hendrickson; Eva and Elise Meyers; and Julien Meyers-Normand. Suzanne is survived by her husband, children, and grandchildren, and by her sister Jean (Mel) Miller, Port Clinton. She was predeceased by her parents and one sister, Julie Meg Wallingford (David). Suzanne is a graduate of Bellevue High School, Lipscomb University, and The University of Toledo. She was a serious student and always graduated at or near the top of her class. She taught elementary school (kindergarten and first grade) for thirty years. One of her joys was encountering her previous students as successful adults. She truly loved them all. Suzanne was a very skilled cook; her raspberry-custard pie was a favorite. She was an artist. Her oil paintings and stained-glass creations hang in many homes in Ohio and other states. She was a musician; she was organist / pianist at Lyme Congregational United Church of Christ for many years. She was ultimately a teacher; she tutored many young people in school subjects and painting at her kitchen table. She enjoyed helping at the Bellevue Society for the Arts, sewing costumes, ushering, painting scenery, and cooking for cabarets. She spent nearly every summer for the past 40 years at the family cottage at Lakeside, Ohio. She and John loved to travel together, particularly to Western Europe and to St. Augustine Beach. Visitation will be Thursday, July 5, 2018 from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Foos and Foos Funeral Service, 151 Yorkshire Place, Bellevue, Ohio. A memorial service will be Friday, July 6, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Lyme Congregational United Church of Christ, 5451 St. Rte. 113 East, Bellevue, Ohio, under the direction of Rev. Martin Stiffler. There will be a luncheon at the Bellevue Society for the Arts, 205 Maple Street, Bellevue, following the memorial service. All friends are invited to attend any of these events.
