Eugene Miller Obituary

Eugene Charles Miller (Chick), 67, of Attica, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family in his home on August 12, 2019.

He was born October 10, 1951, to Leon J. and Rita (Elmlinger) Miller. He married Jane Ann Holmer November 26, 1977.

He is survived by his wife, Janie; daughters, Melissa (Tom) Kneisley of Johnstown and Kimberley (Joe) Ferguson of Attica and grandson Max Joseph Ferguson and granddaughter Ava Grace Ferguson whom he adored dearly; sister, Sister Ritamarie Miller, OSF/T; brothers, Leon H. (Esther) Miller and Gerald C. (Jolene) Miller; brothers-in-law, Fr. James Holmer and Norman (Sandy) Holmer and nine nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leon J. and Rita Miller; brother, Allan; and sister Monica.

Chick was born and raised in Republic. He grew up on a farm working with his father and brothers.  We are going to share the story of how Chick became “Chick”: When Chick was a little boy, between three and four years old his Dad caught him eating the ground chicken feed. Chick’s Dad told him he was going to lay an egg that night. So that night Chick’s Dad put a hard-boiled egg under his pillow and in the morning he found the egg and thought he laid it. So for 63 years Chick has been “Chick” to all those he knows.

Chick was an avid Detroit Tigers and Detroit Lions fan. His love of these teams began when he had a slipped epiphysis in the sixth grade and had to stay home from school for several months.

Chick and Janie met when he bought Big Red gum at a Seneca East High School basketball game where Janie worked the concession stand (Chick didn’t like or chew gum) and that’s where their journey began.

Chick was employed at the National Machinery Co. for 50 years, celebrating his 50th anniversary on May 27, 2019. Chick was still working at National Machinery and farming with his brothers. National Machinery was his second home; he dearly loved working with his co-workers and had no plans to retire.

Chick was an extremely faithful Catholic and a member of St. Gaspar del Bufalo Catholic Church in Bellevue. He was a lector and Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion.  Chick enjoyed going with Janie on communion calls to the sick and homebound. Chick was also a member of Ohio Farm Bureau and National Machinery Quarter Century Club.

Chick will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Chick was a quiet and simple man, and had the gift of earning the love of his family, friends and co-workers.  Chick has been a tremendous role model for his daughters, grandchildren and son-in-laws. Chick had a great memory and shared many stories throughout his life.

The family would like to thank the nursing staff of St.Vincent’s Mercy Medical Center, St. Francis Home and Stein Hospice for their loving care.
