Walter Horn Jr.

Walter Horn, Jr. age 87 of Sandhill Rd., Bellevue passed away Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at the Bellevue Hospital.  He was born Sep. 11, 1921 in Bellevue, the son of the late Walter C. & Blanche (Sherman) Horn.

 

Junior was a life long farmer, a member of Congregational Community United Church of Christ, Monroeville where he served on several committees addition, past president of the Bellevue Milk Producers for 11 years and a board member for 16 years, served on Lyme Twp board of building appeals for 30 + years, a 60 + year member of Lyme Grange where he was elected Master for 3 terms as well as a trustee.  He joined 4-H in 1933.    he was a 4-H member for 11 years and became an advisor in 1941 completing 68 years in 2008 becoming the 4-H advisor with the most tenure in the state of Ohio.  He became a junior fair superintendent for boys club work in 1954 and has continued as a superintendent for 55 years. He was a charter member of the Beef Committee, which formed in 1976 and has remained active as a superintendent.  Walter received State Extension Agents appreciation award in 1979 and was inducted into the Ohio 4-H Hall of Fame in 1998. He served many years on the Huron County 4-H Committee & Extension Advisory Committee and also served 2 terms on the State 4-H Advisory Committee.  He was involved in Community Minded Fair Supporters Committee (CMFSC) since its creation in 1999. Walter was a 12 year Lyme School Board Member and assisted with the consolidation with Bellevue Schools, as part of his duties he helped to start E.H.O.V.E..  He also served as a member of Ohio Corn Growers Association, Soybean Association, Ohio Holstein Association, Huron County Cattleman Association.  He graduated in 1940 from Bellevue Senior High School and loved Redmen and OSU sports.

 

Survivors include his wife Eloise (Hill) Horn whom he married Aug 25, 1945 in Bellevue, children, Rick (Cindy) Horn, Gary (Sue) Horn, Kirk (Jane) Horn, Holly (Gary) Valko, Scott Horn all of Bellevue, grandchildren Erica (Jim) Allen, Krista (Reid) Woodruff, Kyle (Angie) Horn, Gene (Katie Laub) Horn, Noelle (Curt) Linder, Brandi (Ian) Fultz, Ryan (Carrie) Horn, Jon (Erin) Valko, Jenny Valko, 13 great grandchildren,sisters Marian Alice Fox of Florida and  Marjorie Aigler.

 

Friends will be received Friday, June 5, 2009 from 2-8 pm at Foos and Foos Funeral Service, 151 Yorkshire Place, Bellevue.  A funeral service officiated by Rev. Dr. Wayne Chasney will be held at 10:30 am Saturday at Lyme School, 4831 St. Rt. 20 E., Bellevue, OH 44811.  Burial will follow at Bellevue Cemetery.
